Alton Community Centre kicked off the celebrations of it’s 50th anniversary year with their inaugural Duck Race on the stretch of the River Wey which runs under the Centre.

Duck owners and their supporters gathered at Cut Pound to see 107 wonderfully decorated ducks enter the water battling for the coveted first place. Diane the Dinosaur also came along to join in the fun.

Our race was even joined by some of the local wildlife in the form of a couple of mallards and a moorhen, but we are not convinced the mallards didn't get a head start!

There was an element of peril when a few ducks got stuck in the weeds but they were rescued and able to continue the race so no ducks were left behind and all 107 passed the finish line in front of the Centre.

Every owner received a tasty treat for competing whilst there was a £50 voucher for first place. There were first and second prizes for best decorated ducks. We had an amazing array of designs from people of all ages from beautiful patterns to characters from TV, music and movies.

This will be an annual event so if you missed it this year, keep an eye on our social media so you can join in next year!

50 years for a small local charity such as Alton Community Association is quite a milestone and one we are incredibly proud of. We wanted to kick off our celebrations with something lighthearted and fun.

We will be holding plenty of events in the coming months including a childrens disco, free 'Have A Go' Qigong session, and a talk on the history of corsetry because of the buildings prior use as factory making foundation garments. We are also holding The Return of the Commy Disco giving you a chance to relive the discos held at the centre in the 1980s, we've even got the original DJ local legend Dave Paton. We are also heading back to the 80s for an amazing retro keep fit class, so crimpers and leg warmers at the ready!

We continue to be a Community hub at the heart of our community as we have been for the last 50 years and we are committed to continuing to be an essential town facility for the people of Alton and the surrounding areas and looking ahead to the future.

We offer affordable room hire for celebrations, courses, and meeting spaces for local clubs, societies and groups. We have a programme of leisure learning classes which we will be expanding for the Autumn term, minibus hire, shopmobility scheme, ACA Lottery and a community club for the elderly as well as a programme of events for the community to join in with including seasonal markets, free film showings and holistic fairs. Some of our regular events will be offering taster sessions such as Qigong Tai Chi and Soundbaths
